As part of the 2026 Paris Perfume Week organized by Nez, Calice Becker participated in a roundtable discussion entitled “Can an Olfactory Creation Be Protected?”.
As Vice-President of the ISPC and leader of the Society’s Work of Mind Commission, Calice has been actively involved for many years in the reflection surrounding the recognition of perfume as a creative work and the status of perfumers as authors.
The discussion brought together different perspectives on authorship, ownership of formulas, the recognition of creative contribution, and the broader question of how perfumery creations may be understood and protected.
We are pleased to share below the full text of Calice’s intervention, which offers a personal reflection on these questions and contributes to the ongoing dialogue around the place of perfumery among the creative disciplines.
